CAMRA LocAle scheme

November 14th, 2008

LocAle LogoRegular visitors will know that we like to support local breweries wherever possible - we’ve had Concrete Cow (12.5 miles)  Cherwell Valley (8 miles), Oxfordshire Ales (8.5 miles) and Silverstone (8 miles) brews this year. CAMRA also see that as a good idea and have launched an initiative called LocAle to promote it, although their mileage limits are a bit higher than ours!

We are the first pub in our area to join the scheme, and in order to make sure we qualify we’ve done a deal with Silverstone to have their Pit Stop as our session ale for the next three months.

GIG DIARY

October 21st, 2008

We’ve joined up with Lemonrock to provide us with a Gig Diary which you will see is already fairly well populated - you can find it here. They provide a gig alert service by SMS and printable Gig guides.

We are aiming to book a band every fortnight. If you hear any good bands locally and you think they might suit The Mitre, please let us know!

FIREWORKS PARTY

October 5th, 2008

Our Guy Fawkes FIREWORKS PARTY will be on Saturday 1st November with the display starting at 7.30pm. Yes, I’ve gone spending mad on fireworks again (those who saw last year’s will know what I mean) but this time the display will be a little further away from the pub, not least to spare my thatched roof . . .

If you fancy some videos of the sort of thing I have in my garage, check them out here

EDIT - well that was fun - I’ve never been so wet with clothes on! The remaining fireworks that would not light are being dried out and I’ll have another go on a DRY night . . .

The Red Bullets

October 5th, 2008

Peter Edwards’ band The Red Bullets will be back at the Mitre on the 17th October at 8.30pm. The band has had a great year winning fans round the country, and our gig comes two weeks before their appearance at the prestigious Stables in Wavendon. Have a look and listen to their music on their Myspace page.

New Users - Information

September 27th, 2008

As this site appears to be receiving the attention of robots that create users and post links to dodgy porn sites, I’ve had to limit the role of new users to ‘Subscriber’ so they can’t post anything. If you would like to register and post items, email me at keith(a)themitre.org.uk once you have registered and I will up your access level.

PS the porn sites were no good anyway, so you’re not missing anything.

How green is your pub?

September 25th, 2008

I was thinking the other day about how environmentally friendly The Mitre was as a business.

  •  Beer and Cider is delivered in stainless steel kegs which have a long lifespan and are cleaned and re-used many times.
  • Although returnable bottles are no more, all the glass bottles we use are recycled, sometimes six dustbins full each week. We don’t have any products in plastic containers, and the small number of cans we have are also recycled.
  • Cardboard and paper containers are all recycled too. Our dustbin is rarely more than half full each week.
  • We are buying an increasing number of beers from breweries located less than 20 miles away, some much less than that.
  • The gas we use for propelling keg beers is mostly Nitrogen, CO2 only being used for soft drinks.
  • Finally, the eggs we sell are laid approximately 30 feet from the bar!

We are back in the book . . .

September 10th, 2008

Regular readers will know that it has always been my goal to get The Mitre back in the CAMRA Good Beer Guide. This accolade is only awarded to a pub by the members of CAMRA who consider the beer a pub sells as suitable for inclusion. That’s it - just beer quality, but their assumption is that if the beer’s OK then the rest of the pub will be as well looked after. I am glad to say that The Mitre is included in the 2009 Guide and well done to Matt for getting back in first time. I hope we continue to be there for 2010 and beyond!

Jane’s birthday

September 10th, 2008

Occuring as it normally does on the 12th of September, Jane’s birthday will be celebrated this year by a live band ‘Loose Covers’ - you are cordially invited!

Euro 2008 Quarter Final Predictions

June 15th, 2008

As there is a very short time between the results of the final day of the Group Stages and the start of the Quarter Finals, I have built a form for you to submit your predictions:

Quarter Finals

However, nicely printed forms are available in the pub, which I am sure are better to use, and you can get a pint to help you think!

Whatever method you use, please submit these before the first Quarter Final kicks off on Thursday 19th.
