Euro 2008 Quarter Final Predictions

June 15th, 2008

As there is a very short time between the results of the final day of the Group Stages and the start of the Quarter Finals, I have built a form for you to submit your predictions:

Quarter Finals

However, nicely printed forms are available in the pub, which I am sure are better to use, and you can get a pint to help you think!

Whatever method you use, please submit these before the first Quarter Final kicks off on Thursday 19th.

Spring Update

March 17th, 2008

It’s all systems go at the moment – Trevor has re-opened the little chimney and installed a lovely Victorian cast iron coal fireplace, which makes the bar really warm and welcoming. We are making good progress with the re-decorating, and Gary has just completed the path and second patio, so we can start planting and re-seeding the lawn ready for a fantastic summer (well, let’s hope so anyway…). New garden furniture arrives next week, and the tubs are being planted up ready for the Easter break. We have lots planned over the next few weeks…

Snail Racing

Bring your own snail, or buy a ‘specially trained racing snail’ from us, and witness the thrilling spectacle of these highly strung thoroughbreds speeding across the racecourse. All proceeds to Sport Aid.

Changes

February 25th, 2008

This week some more work has been done to the pub. We now boast two real fires, one coal and one mix. Larger flatscreen tele’s. Improvements to the garden will continue in the spring with a new paved area and raised beds for planting already being planned.

Aunt Sally

February 8th, 2008

As some of you will know, we are planning to set up an Aunt Sally pitch in the garden when the weather gets better. We will be forming two teams for training purposes, and then look for competition with other pubs.

From Wikipedia: “Today, the game of Aunt Sally is still played as a pub game in Oxfordshire, Berkshire and Buckinghamshire. The ball is on a short plinth about 10cm high, and is known as a ‘dolly’. The dolly is placed on a dog-legged metal spike and players throw sticks or short battens at the dolly, trying to knock it off without hitting the spike.”

“Two teams of eight players throw six sticks each per leg. The game is played over three legs. The largest number of dolls scored per team wins each leg. If there is a tie in the decisive leg, each team can throw three sticks and then one until there is a decisive result. In the league system, however these days legs can be tied, with two points being awarded for a leg win and one for a draw. If a player fails to score in a leg, it is called a blob with the ultimate embarrassment of a three blob game often being published in the local newspapers sports section. It is a custom that the winner of the fourth (beer) leg is bought a drink of their choice by a member of the opposing team. “

Dwyle Flonking Team News

December 13th, 2007

Here is a transcript I found the other day.

Dwyle Flonking typically involves two teams of twelve players, although there is great flexibility in number, terminology and rules. One of the teams forms a circle (the girter) enclosing a member of the other team (the flonker). He holds a broom handle (driveller) on top of which is a rag soaked with beer - the dwyle.

The girter dances round the flonker in a circle. He must flick (or flonk) the dwile with the driveller so it hits a girter team member. The score depends on which part of the body he hits. Scoring is 3 points for a hit on the head (a wanton) 2 points for a hit on the body (a marther) and one point for a leg or arm (a ripple). If the flonker fails to score he is swadged, or potted, which means he has to drink a pint of beer from a chamber pot. If the flonker succeeds then his victim has to drink the chamber pot instead. After all the members of one team have flonked, the other teams is ‘in’. The winner is the team with the most points after two innings, which is usually the team with the most left upright.
